The Profile and The History

Solo City has interesting history. Solo which in the past was known as Sala Village was a swampty forest area. Around 260 years ago, on 17 February 1745 or 14 Asyura 1670 (Javanese Calendar), King Pakubuwono II who ruled Mataram Kartasuro Kingdom, chose Sala Vilage to be the new centre of the kingdom, named Kasunanan Hadiningrat Palace.

In the development, Solo City has changed to be one of the biggest centre of trade, industry and tourism in Central Java. Solo City area is about 44 km2 wide, 98 m above sea level and the average temperature is 26 degree Celsius. The number of population is around 600.000 of people.

In the political map, Solo City formed two palaces; Kasunanan & Mangkunegaran. In the beginning of Republic Indonesia, Solo city was appointed to be the capital of Surakarta Residency, consist of 7 districts: Sukoharjo, Boyolali, Surakarta/Solo, Karanganyar, Wonogiri, Sragen and Klaten (Subosukawonosraten).

Changing the modern city, Solo is still the center of the preservation and development of Javanese art and culture. This is because the original Javanese culture such as music, dance, instrument/gamela, art/handicrafts, batik, weapon forging & literature still always be sustained by most of the people.
